vintage *pink* kitchen cabinet

a couple of weeks ago kristi and i were out hunting and came across this fabulous vintage glass front cabinet.
i love these old cabinets. they are great for display but are also extremely practical if you have a vintage home. lots of older homes are lacking adequate cupboard space; i have used pieces such as these as a pantry. they look fantastic stuffed full of vintage tins and old jars and canisters filled with dry goods. when we found it we of course wanted it for our shop, but talked ourselves out of buying it. right after that we found a 1941 corner cabinet that had been painted jadeite green with red trim. we bought that instead and had in in our antique shop space within minutes.
but we couldn't get this pink cabinet out of our minds.
so, days later, we went back to see if it was still there. it was, and we succumbed.

someone had at some point, decided to 'refinish' this piece.
ack!!!
they worked a bit on one side and a small piece of the front with paint stripper. thank goodness they got discouraged and quit.
i was able to closely match the paint and touched it up, and it looks great.we are planning on covering the four shelves with vintage-patterned oil cloth. i love the funkiness of the paint and the original vintage glass knob.
but our very favorite thing about this piece is the decal that someone put on one side; isn't she so cute?!?
we are, of course, leaving it on there.
thank goodness the 'refinisher' didn't start on that side!

yard sale finds

so here is what we found at judy's sale:
english floral bone china teapot; a set of vintage pink damask napkins; a pair of two vintage pink damask christmas napkins...
a few pieces of funny 70s beaded fruit; a 1960s avocado green jewelry tray, and a small old mirror with the speckled finish we all love in a shabby cream painted frame.
we also bought a pink and aqua ruched satin hankie box, and a marble-base 60s hairspray can holder; 3 vintage quilted satin glove and stocking dresser boxes, all in shades of pink...
a box of vintage christmas ornaments, all very shabby and most pink... there also were 4 or 5 very old mercury glass clip-on bird ornaments; they don't have their tails anymore, but i don't mind...
and a 1950s/ 60s record holder. (its the white rack-thing holding the ornaments). it was originally meant to hold old 45's. i have no idea what i will do with it, but i like it.

we found 2 framed huldah prints and an old gold florist's arrangement holder in a wonderful fan shape...

an unframed oil painting in a very cheerful color; a 1950s cat planter...
a 1940s toilet paper holder in black with pink roses. it needs to be cleaned up but hey, it was $1.

i also bought two boxes of 1960s satin ornaments. these are the kind that form the base for the beaded ornaments i adore finding. love the hot pink color!

also, rhinestone belt buckles (which i didn't get in the picture) two rhinestone pins, a daisy pattern beaded case (originally a cigarette case, but would be great for bills and credit cards);
two currier and ives vintage plates: winter and spring, in pleasing pastels...
and a pink painted mesh metal stand, from the 40s or 50s.

all that and the pink lloyd loom blanket chest.
not a bad haul for half an hour!

hope you had a fun saturday and that you found wonderful vintage treasures of your own~

ramblin' ruby's yard sale

oh, yeah.
we hit judy's yard sale yesterday afternoon. i am sure she was relieved to see us come and go, because she had been fighting people off all afternoon, as they were trying to gain early access.you'll really have to pardon my photos; when i am in the field, i get so excited i am really not focused on anything but the goods...and, so, as you can see, neither are my photos!judy had bargain tables with vintage stuff ranging in price all the way down to 50 cents..
50 cents!!!! we made two piles: things we bought for re-sale, and my own personal pile, which was the larger of the two.
one thing i didn't get a picture of was a 1930s lloyd loom pink blanket chest with floral fabric on the top. it is already in our space in the shop.
we wish we were able to put large things on our website. it is really a wonderful piece: it can do double duty as bench for the foot of the bed or as a window seat in a bay window.
we recently sold a green one we had in our shop space, but this one actually has the 'lloyd loom' original sticker. and, as i said, it is PINK!!!!
if it doesn't sell it will eventually make it's home with me.
tomorrow i will show you what else we brought home.
is there anything more fun that hitting some really good sales and coming home and spreading out your treasure?

vintage kitchen linens

i pullled some of the vintage doilies and pot holders we have in our antique booth today and had fun looking at them.
if i can find time next week, i will take pictures of them and put them in our online shop. i just love these; they are little works of art. i admire the time, love and creativity that went into each and every one of them
to be perfectly honest, i think another reason i like them so much is that they don't need to be ironed!
whenever we buy vintage linens of any sort, i usually take them home and soak them. and if they require ironing, they go home with kristi.
i don't iron, i soak.
today i am really excited because after the shop closes kristi and i are going to our friend judy's yard sale.
judy's yard sales are the stuff my dreams are made of.
and, she is giving us first dibs!
i can hardly wait, and will share this weekend what we find.
have a great morning tomorrow treasure hunting where ever you may be!

vintage linens and lace

kristi and i both have a weakness for vintage linens; it may have started when our mom inherited our spanish grandmother's cedar hope chest. it was chock full of fine old linens: dresser cloths, runners, tablecloths...there were embroidered pieces and pieces embellished with lace.
they were lovely and time worn, and we spent an afternoon drinking tea and sorting through them, and we each went home with a stack of things.
we were hooked.

we have recently found some really terrific embroidered items, which we have added to our online shop.
teapots and teacups...

wonderful work in french knots...
gardens of flowers...

a bluebird...

and lots of crocheted lace.
we also have been busy hunting high and low to replenish our stash of hand made kitchen linens...crochet pot holders and doilies in cottage perfect colors.

these charming items are a favorite of mine to collect. i have my own private stash that i add to a piece at a time, but i also like to share
so we will be adding quite a few of those to our boutique next week.
tomorrow we will be featuring rose-themed vintage items (some of them on sale!) for make mine pink's 'pink friday'.

we do hope you'll stop by!

summer's here!

summer has finally arrived, and the weather we are having confirms the fact.
it is hot and dry, but we are blessed here in northern california with cool mornings and evenings.
it feels so good to be outdoors!
we have been busy shopping and have some great stuff that we have been excited to show you...

right after i last posted back on the 15th, i lost internet service.
my dsl modem died, and i was unable to find one to replace it...seems at & t had a widespread problem with the modems they provided their customers.
hmmmm...very curious.
well, whatever.
i am just so glad to be back and look forward to finally being able to show and share some of our lastest finds.
the picture above shows a fabulous 1930 chandelier that we have restored and dressed up with prisms and candles...so lovely for wonderful summer dining al fresco.
the photo is a quick one kristi and i took yesterday, so it really doesn't do this piece justice...i will post better photos when we offer it for sale this weekend.
it's good to be back!

vintage doll bed

i am so excited about this find, which i just brought home this morning.

is this not so cute?
it makes me sad that someone let this go...
it was obviously hand made and well used.
what a sweet little piece of furntiure to hand down.

but i know someone will be happy to give this a new home. it needs just a bit of cleaning up to be ready to go into our space in the antique shop, and into our internet shop, also.

don't you love the calico pillow and mattress?

gather ye rosebuds...

we have had an unusual spring here in the foothills of the sierra nevadas, with mild, cool days which may linger on for the beginning of summer, a mere 8 days away.
i awoke early today, and went into a chilly morning to gather sweet peas and wild roses.
it is very fragrant in my garden at the moment; the jasmine is thriving and is heavenly outside my bedroom window, the perfume carried in by the soft breezes.
the lavender is plentiful and the roses are preparing for a second bloom.
the hydrangeas are finally flowering, and i was surprised to see hollyhocks (so early!) in a neighbor's yard as i walked my dog last evening.
we may even get rain today, which is great...the chore of watering slavishly morning and evening will be part of the day's routine soon enough.

whatever you have planned for the weekend, we hope you find time to savor and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, wherever you may be.

vintage indie

we're back!
it has been waaaay too long.
we have been spending the last 6 weeks concentrating on our space in the antique co-op here in our town.

we have 'gone big' and taken more space.
it is amazing how quickly we filled it.
like closet space, there never seems to be enough.

speaking of the antique co-op, gabreial at vintage indie was gracious to ask us to talk a little bit about being in an antique co-op as part of the 'business series' of her online magazine,
vintage indie.
if you have never logged onto her site, be sure to drop by. it is filled with all kinds of fun stuff for us true lovers of vintage.
we look forward to getting back in the swing of things; we will be back with make mine pink in july, and can't wait to participate in all the fun events.
stay tuned for new merchandise to be added to our shop, and more posts about garage sales and estate sales and flea markets here locally, as it is high season for all of that.
love it!
thanks for stopping by, and please be sure to visit gabreial at
