i used to get very excited by button jars, and would savor diving into them when i got them home to see what treasure was hidden in the middle. but then the thrifts started charging $10 for button jars ! so i don't do that anymore...
but yesterday, there on the shelf was this little jar, filled with small glass beads.
what they are are parts of mercury glass beaded garlands, and tiny feather tree ornaments, complete with tiny hangers.but what i love best about this find is that they were all kept in a vintage borden's mayo jar, complete with a picture of the borden contented cow.
what was her name?
was it elsie?
then i found two bags of ribbons...this also is like a treasure chest to me. i peeked at what i could see from the sides of the bags, and decided to take them both. they were $3 a bag.
inside the first bag there is gorgeous satins, and a luscious embossed ivory ribbon, which i am pretty sure is silk.
there is also plenty of polka dot ribbon in black and white, which we LOVE finding!
we will save that for special gifts or projects for our shop.
the second bag was also stuffed with wonderful ribbon...again, lots of satins, and a few velvets in silk.
there is nothing like silk velvet.

i love the tag on this ribbon more than the ribbon itself, and like to imagine the person picking it out at their local department store.
i remember when the bullock's in my home town had a notions department, as well as an elevator that announced the next floor's departments..."third floor...notions, ladies fashions, foundations..." (for those of you too young to remember, that is what under garments were called!)
i am thrilled with what i found.
my daughter loves vintage trims and ribbons so i will pull several out of this stash to put in her christmas stocking.
when you do a lot of your shopping in thrifts for vintage treasure, its never too soon to start.
i have a special place in my room where i tuck things all year long.
i'll bet you do that, too!
